Thoughts: DISAPPOINTED HOPES AND DREAMS started this set, but then gorgeousness finished it.

So basically, I’ve been “working” on a different set for Niremere for oh, I think … twenty four weeks or so by now?  It’s complete except for the gloves, which are from a raid with a weekly lockout WHICH NEVER DROP.  She was wearing the incomplete set when Theramore was first nuked off the map, and she’s been wearing it ever since (the gloves will drop next week … hope springs eternal).  But I was getting tired of wearing it without the gloves, and heck, maybe they weren’t dropping BECAUSE I was wearing it.  You know, don’t tempt fate and all that jazz.

Simultaneously, I decided to start tanking on Niremere again.  I accordingly assembled a bunch of tanking gear, which of course didn’t match AT ALL.  At some point I picked up a Renowned Guild Tabard to cover the chest because of the ACK NOT MATCHING, which is when I realized that damn – that’s one hot tabard!

The Furious Ornamented Gladiator’s stuff matched well, I thought, and although normally, the Breastplate of Wracking Souls would never go, all you see are the dark sleeves and the high neck – so it works.

The problem I experienced with this set was more of my own doing than anything else.  Since I didn’t really want to aim for something that involved yet another raid with a weekly lockout (Ulduar, I’m looking at you), I decided sure, I’ll PvP for that pair of boots and shield.  It may be painful, but at least I’m guaranteed to get it.  (Side note: my current quibble is that the gems on the shoulders are blue, while the ones on the shield are green.  I’m telling my OCD side to shut the hell up.)

AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.  Apparently, Alliance PvP is le suck (or so I’m told), so coping with the weekly lockout and my bad luck might’ve been easier.

I COULDN’T ROFFLESTOMP THIS DUDE AND HIS LIGHTWELL!  URGH!  He was just chilling behind this wall by the flag, merrily healing anybody who grabbed it.  So I tried to punch him, but when he didn’t shield himself, he pulled up a Lightwell that had about 1/3rd my HP and because he can, you know, heal in addition to that (and so can I) – we pretty much entered a total stalemate.  I had to get a friend to come over and help me evict him from the premises, because NOBODY ELSE WAS PAYING ATTENTION.

In good news, I got the boots and shield.  I just lost all faith in humanity (again).

Double You Tee Eff (Niremere Hits 90)

ORBS ARE BADSO WAS THE TANK

ORBS ARE BAD
SO WAS THE TANK

The DPS queue for regular Pandaland dungeons is bad, man – it takes around thirty minutes on a good day, and you’re kinda effed should things not go over well (see: Exhibit A, above).  That party, for example, was a fatal mix where Nir and maybe one other DPS were attacking the orbs, the healer ran into the group of mobs by the bridge that the party had skipped, and the tank had little sense of positioning.  After we all wiped, the tank left and we requeued, only to get – you guessed it – the same damn tank, who then pulled the boss and dumped our asses.  Nir grabbed her sword and shield and tried to tank (as a retadin with no tanking gear!) while killing orbs, but … well, you see how that went.

So she spent most of her time questing.  I won’t lie, Niremere had one hell of a time in Pandaland regardless of the queue business – I don’t know if her gear sucked (probably), it was her spec (also likely, since she’s ret) or if she just had really bad luck (very possible), but sheeyit hurt bad.  Townlong Steppes and the bile-spewing, poisoning, mass-attacking mantid were very unforgiving (I have HOW MANY stacks of this bleeding debuff now!?), to the point where some of my Hordeside guildmates tried to help me out despite that whole language/faction barrier thing.

IMMEDIATELY after hitting 90, Niremere joined a Sha of Anger run … and somehow, she didn’t die during the whole thing.  WEIRD.

Now to work on her mining and blacksmithing, which are still back in the Lich King skill range.  Derp.

Playing Favorites

The shared blog topic thingus this time around, as proposed by Matty, is all about why a certain character may be your favorite or your go-to char to play.  Given the number of alts I have (I don’t have a problem!  I can quit whenever I want!), I don’t have just one favorite.  If I had to choose, though, I could DEFINITELY narrow it down to the top three.

1. Thermalix

Thermalix Spendtrue

Thermalix Spendtrue: Her True Form

As the second character I created when I first started playing again post-Cata, Thermalix has had her ups and downs over time (and also her different forms, as she was once Versebelg the troll).  I always seem to come back in the end because hunter is quite possibly the perfect class and goblin the most ideal race for me as a player.  As a hunter, I can play independently or with a group.  Speaking of groups, I’m lazy, so the fact that everyone has low expectations for huntards means that I can surpass most people’s low opinions with a minimum amount of effort!  And as a goblin, I thoroughly enjoy being cheerfully demented and in general not taking things too damn seriously.

Thermalix: OMG!

Thermalix ruins Vol’jin’s moment.

Thermalix: Just Sayin'

Thermalix is just sayin’

For better or worse, Therm is probably closest to my actual personality – quirky, intelligent and prone to running into things.

2. Ailabeth

Ailabeth Blisswell

Ailabeth Blisswell

The number two slot goes to Ailabeth, who was the first character I made when I returned post-Cata and who is my namesake.  Though I don’t roleplay very much due to finding it really hard to take things seriously (there’s something rather stilted about using the /em system in public for conversations that would almost certainly be private), Ailabeth tends to be the representative of my darker, more cynical and definitely more destructive elements.  Forsaken are perfect vessels for feelings of sadness, loss, betrayal and fierce independence.

And as a shadow priest, melting brains is always fun.  I also like mind controlling humanoids and forcing them to jump or run around in circles.  I remain disappointed that you can’t make Vrykul /dance.

3. Niremere

Niremere Tasset Lane

Niremere Tasset Lane

Lastly, there’s Niremere, who quite possibly has the most established/typical history of the bunch despite that total lack of roleplaying that I do.  (I felt I had to cook something up to explain why she uses a sword and shield despite being Retribution nine times out of ten!)  As a human and paladerp, Niremere gets to be all the positive, warm and fluffy ideals that I either aspire to or refuse to admit I want on a regular basis.  She is the calm one (in reality I might be calm on one frappuchino, but definitely not none or two) who acts on reason, the just one who seeks to treat all living things with compassion, and the one who will honestly admit to having a totally hopeless crush on the King.  Nir is the one who wants to save All Teh Things even though she logically knows that this is not possible.

Niremere in Progress

Awww, how nice!

Awww, how nice!
First time anybody’s said this in person!

As Niremere was getting on the Deeprun Tram, she encountered a night elf who initiated the above conversation.  This was the first time anybody’s ever said anything in-game about my transmogs, so I was quite flattered.  Her “Stereotypical Paladink” outfit is still technically in progress on three counts, which add up to a “Eh, don’t want to post it here yet” sort of feeling.

I can most likely (carefully) solo for the gloves, because I’m at a level where LOL I IZ INVINCIBLE KINDA SORTA!  Since this is for transmog and not stats, I’ll accept the regular or heroic versions of the Hammer of Sparks (I have a two-handed mace for Retribution … just need the 1-hander for those times when I run as Protection).  While it may be time-consuming to use the Dungeon Finder, I’d hardly call Lost City of the Tol’Vir a huge challenge.  No, the biggest problem is the floaty, shiny crown-thing that I want, which comes from the Black Temple.  I have yet to land a group where I can reserve the damn thing, and if I can’t reserve it, there’s no reason for Nir to go.  (Mech’s already run the Black Temple, so with shared achievements …)  Every darn time there’s been another paladin who wants the whole damn set and threatens to throw a hissy fit over the crown alone, so rather than feed the drama llamas and fight them for it, I just toss up my hands and go about my battle pet taming business elsewhere.  Hyjal Summit, you say?  Wazzat?  That is, I know what it is (Mech or Therm’s been there, done that), but it’s even rarer to see a group for that form up.  There’s a PvP lookalike for 1000 Honor Points, but I don’t know if I’m that desperate … not yet.  (Especially since I just went through another spate of PvP for Centina, who wanted some shoulders and a hood only obtainable with HP.)

But … it’s … so shiny …

In the meantime, here’s Niremere with the tabard she worked so mind-bogglingly hard for (and some temporary stand-ins, like the Golden Circlet).

OMG I NEED TABARD

Stage 2:
Prinnie levels Niremere faster than she has ever leveled any character before, and reaches 85.
(Side effect: temporary to permanent loss of sanity and diminished logical function.)

The level cap’s gonna change.

Stage 3:
Now exhausted but obsessing over gear score and her typically poor rolls, Prinnie
crashes and burns when faced with one too many fellow paladinks with bad looting habits.

(Seriously, tank, you needed on a one hand AGI axe when there was a rogue in the party?)
(Also, needing gold is not a good reason to roll need.  /kill /murder /maim)

Stage 4:
Surprise!  Guildmates help Prinnie out.
The plan: run heroics for JP and plate drops, since Prinnie is the only plate wearer.

Unfortunately, this is me they’re helping.

Thoughts: Nothing real creative here, but I had to do it.  I love the Overlord’s Set, as it’s simple, effective, shiny and even plausible.  Unfortunately, I never have been able to afford the price it typically commands on the WRA AH; the legplates and greaves were lucky strikes obtained when someone put them up but didn’t see the lack of a critical zero.  (Nobody cares about the itty bitty unimpressive crown, so that at least was cheap!)

Somehow, luck struck again, though this time in the form of Kum’isha the Collector.  He is usually not my friend, as he complains about every imperfect Draenethyst ever and has a thing for giving me Basilisk Bones, which don’t even vendor well, that bleepity bleep!  But the other day, he gave Nir the Overlord’s Chestplate, and Nir was overjoyed.  It was transmog time!

She insisted on using the Darksoul Shoulders still, as souls were sold to get ’em.  You’ve got to get your money’s soul’s worth with these things, you know?  The Zaxxis Gloves are a quest reward; I’d prefer the Bloodforged Gauntlets as they’re a more solid red, but the price on those is ridiculous and I can only sell my soul for so many future reincarnations before I start having second thoughts.

Class: Warrior, Paladink, Death Knight

H: Overlord’s Crown | S: Darksoul Shoulders | Cl: Pale Moon Cloak | Ch: Warmaul Breastplate
G: Area 52 Engineering Gloves | Wa: Goblin Girdle | L: Imbued Plate Leggings | B: Lavawalker Greaves

Mace: Battlesmasher
Shield: Aegis of the Scarlet Commander

Status: Finished
To Find: Nothing

Thoughts: Caliverne handed me some Imbued Plate Leggings on the condition that I not use them on a goblin, since they’re short and green.  Okay, well, my only non-goblin plate wearer is Niremere, so she gets ’em by default!  Technically, some of this is actually being worn and isn’t transmogged (yet), since Nir is juuuuust at the level needed to obtain/wear these items and they actually have useful stats for her.  I can thank Caliverne for the shield as well, in fact – I had been debating getting rid of it long before they announced the redo of Scholo and the Scarlet areas.  (Nir’s not a Scarlet type, not by a long shot.)  He persuaded me to keep it, and as it turns out, it can no longer be obtained.  Conveniently, it also matches!

The “Soul Seller” name comes from the fact that I sold my soul (again?) to obtain the shoulders, which are a craftable item from a recipe that you can no longer get.  Caliverne owns my soul first, still, so I guess after I reincarnate, it is then in Tab’s debt to the tune of 4.5k and interest (the latter of which is payable in guilt and suffering).  The outfit is also somewhat of a sell out in that it’s tending towards the platekini in the bewbal region.  Nir will probably wear this until she is high enough to wear the “Stereotypical Noble Paladin” set I’m planning, or until I become too ashamed, whichever comes first.  (Probably the shame.)  When they said breastplate, they weren’t kidding!  /slaps self

The Pale Moon Cloak wouldn’t work for a character with short hair, as it has green hues at the top that are hidden by Nir’s smooth locks.

I like the Area 52 Engineering Gloves, as they repeat the Imbued pattern from the thighs of the leg piece, but aren’t as “thick” as the regular Imbued gauntlets.  The Goblin Girdle isn’t an exact match, but it is close enough under most lighting circumstances and serves two purposes: 1.) Bring in the darker portions of Warmaul Breastplate, and 2.) COVER HER STOMACH OMG I DIDN’T KNOW THOSE PANTS WENT SO LOW.  Yeah.  Just in case you aren’t aware, female characters experience a definite dip in the front waistline of the Imbued Plate Leggings.

Nir’s top also illustrates a classic conundrum in shirts designed for women.  You want to pull it down to cover the muffin effect you are surely experiencing because of these stupid jeggings, but then you need to pull the top back up because it feels like it’s going to fall off and that would be bad.  You sneak in little tugs when you think no one is looking, but everyone knows anyway.  (This being a fantasy world, however, Niremere has no worries about the girls greeting other people unexpectedly.)

Post-patch acclimatization process initializing.

So I’m slowly spending some time reacquainting myself with the different classes.

Summary for the tl;dr folks:

  1. Thingie lives on, long live Charge
  2. Majig got deleted because of bad totem feelings
  3. Arcane mage/protection paladink feel the same to me as they did before
  4. I need Shadowstep back, but level 60 seems so far away
  5. OMGWTF I HATE HATE HATE abilities that are under 15 seconds especially if you have to keep them up
  6. “Choice” is crap, there’s still a set of talents that “should” be chosen
  7. Where’s the Shadow talent choice at level 90 add one soon plzkthx
  8. Screw the standard Shadow talent build, I want my Shadowsquid

The Good Parts:

Caliverne nearly had a heart attack when I told him I was considering deleting a fellow warrior, but thanks to the patch, Thingie survived The Purging of the Alts.  Warriors got Titan’s Grip at a super low level and now rage regeneration feels easier (once I was reminded that I should probably use a Stance and all).  I also remembered that I really like Charge-ing into things, even though I do sometimes get a little Charge happy and Charge into the wrong mobs across the room.

Centina’s now up to 70.  Prior to the patch, people kept on complaining that now Arcane mages will have to hit a grand total of three buttons OMFG.  Maybe I’ve been a screwup as a mage, as I was always hitting three buttons or more.  In any case, it mostly seems the same as before, except I can’t tell what the hell causes Arcane Missiles to pop (sometimes I can just keep on smashing Arcane Blast forever la la la), and sometimes I get two shots of Arcane Missiles for no apparent reason.  This, however, is not something I feel mad about.  FIRE ZE MISSILES!*

Niremere has no idea how lowbie protection tanking is different now.  For her, it’s exactly like it was before.  Run in, smash things in face with a shield, smash more things and Judgementize them, yell at the huntard/priest/mage who insists on shooting the next mob before you pull the mob yourself, rinse, repeat.  Also, how many bad euphemisms/puns was Blizzard knowingly making when they created that glyph where you get a buff if you mount up?

The Iffy Part:
I’ve been leveling Bombelina because OMFG BOXES HELP ME BOXES EVERYWHERE I couldn’t unlock the boxes I was picking up, and that was the whole damn point of this rogue business.  My favorite thing ever, Shadowstep, is now a talent that I can’t get back until level 60.  I liked that skill an awful lot because I suck at positioning (hence why I often like ranged damage, because my position is simply “far away from the thing that hurts”).  On the other hand, because I have played her more recently, I seem to be getting less sucky at rogue-ing in general.  I just spend the whole pug pickpocketing anyway.

The Bad Parts:
Why the mother trucking @#$% bleeping bleepity bleep bleep bleep are there now so damned many bleeping @#%# skills under thirty seconds, some of which you’re supposed to “keep up at all times”?  If it isn’t obvious by now, I hate it when things that are Generally Useful and/or Need to Be Kept Up are also really stupid short.  Short is okay when it’s a “Save My Ass” skill or talent, but if it’s something you’re using all the damn time?  Annoying as @^#$.

Take shamans, for example.  Once upon a time, shaman totems lasted a grand total of thirty seconds to however many minutes.  It was possible to glyph them so they lasted longer, and you damn well better believe that I did.  My only issue was that although you got four “sets” that you could set up and summon, you couldn’t label those sets, which in turn made it somewhat difficult to remember which same-looking icon was which bunch of totems.

Blizzard decided to solve this totem complexity issue by making totems into mostly non-buffs that last fifteen seconds or so.  They have specific situational uses, that is, pray to God your situation lasts fifteen seconds or less (or that you’re not fighting in the same spot for more than fifteen seconds).  Fightin’!  Lemme throw down this totem.  Fightin’!  Oh wait.  Gotta do it again.  Fightin’!  Wait.  Totem time!  I’d rather just not use totems at that rate, but the reason I made a goblin shaman in the first place was because I really liked the way goblin totems looked.  Also, /sadface in that you only toss down one totem or two, because I liked having all the awesome looking totems around me.  Yeah, I deleted Majig.

I’m also feeling pissy about similar timing changes made to shadow priest skills.  For example:

Shadow Word: Pain lasts 18 seconds.
Vampiric Touch lasts 15 seconds.
Devouring Plague lasts 6 seconds.

You’re supposed to keep Pain and Vampiric Touch up all the time.  (In addition, Mind Flay no longer resets Shadow Word: Pain.)  #$% my life.

The new setup to “provide players with the flexibility to choose certain talents without backlash” is a bunch of pretentious game designer bullsheeyit; it sounds nice when you say it and nice when you plan it, but it isn’t actually true in practice.  DPS bean counters and number aficionados have, of course, already figured out The New Standard, and there is, of course, only one New Standard (unlike the one and a half there was before when there were ninety million talents).  Are you really free to choose any talent?  Yeah, right, since you need to choose certain ones for your DPS – your reason for existing.  (Also, why is there no Shadow variant for the level 90 tier?  FAIL!)

You know what Ailabeth says?  Eff it.  Eff it all.  She is keeping her Mindbender Shadowsquid.  It’s not like I was ever top DPS in the first place or even anywhere close.  I’ll take my “Passive Aggressive Mana Management” scheme and just make it a “Passive Aggressive Low Damage Justification Because I Want My Shadowsquid Dammit” scheme.

*(But I am le tired!)

Character Futures and Stuff

I wanted full body shots in different poses for the character profile pages I have up, so made new images.  I wound up not using shoulders for most, because my ModelViewer sometimes does strange things – and at the time I was fiddling with these, shoulders were showing up Tauren-sized on everybody.  I didn’t think it looked too bad on Thermalix, given the pose I went with, but for everybody else?  It just looked dumb.

I’m also taking a moment to sit down and make a kinda sorta plan for what I intend to do with the dramatis personae come Pandaland.

Mechalis

Mechalis

Quote: “Wanna purchase a Rocket Camel?  It’s totally legal on all four continents although some faction exceptions may apply!”

Will She Survive Pandas: Yes.  She doesn’t care about pandas, unlesssss she can put a rocket or two on them and see how aerodynamically they behave when launched.  Don’t worry, she’ll make sure there’s a trampoline they can land on.  What?  It’s perfectly safe.

Future Plans: As my primary melee DPS, Mech will likely be among the first of my gals to make it to 90, for those times when things need to be smashed.  I am certain that there will be smashing times ahead.

Thermalix Spendtrue

Thermalix

Quote: “I soooo did not mean to shoot that.”

Will She Survive Pandas:  Hell yes, ain’t no panda nowhere gonna take her down no way no how!  Also, ENORMOUS ROCKET MOUNT MUST HAVE.

Future: Thermalix is the only one who has clear goals for the expansion.  She will probably be the first to make it to 90, as my inner hunter pet collector will kick in (again) and I will need to tame a Purple Armored Stone Quilen, and a White Porcupine, and a Goat of some color, and a Green Fen Strider (or maybe a white one!), and a Black Crane, and a Raven, and a Ghost Saber Worg, and and and!  Yay!

There are only two depressing things for Thermalix in this: you can’t tame color changers any more (thank God she got her color changing scarab already), and she really, really wishes they’d increase the stable space to allow for more pets.  Thermalix is going to have to let some of her darlings go, and that’s always a tough call.

Centina Dollarbender

Centina

Quote: “The sky is falling!  The sky is falling!”

Will She Survive Pandas: Yes, providing no panda hits her.  If one does, she’s probably going to get one-shotted.

Future: She will inch towards the new level limit (providing she ever reaches the old one), forced to do so by her fondness for leveling tailoring in order to get rid of all the fabric scraps she hoards.  When her bank is full, it’s time to level tailoring.  When she can’t level tailoring, it’s time to level herself.  While dungeoning, she’ll pick up more fabric.  It is an endless cycle.

Bombelina Sparklefuse

Bombelina

Quote: “I’ll just spend this whole pug pickpocketing.  I’m sure you don’t mind.”

Will She Survive Pandas: Yes.  I want my own lockbox opener, dammit.  Also, she only has one transmog outfit to her name, and that’s just friggin’ sad.

Future: She will be forced to level so that she can open up the high level lockboxes the others keep sending to her.  They’re really starting to stack up!  As my only leather wearer, she’s also going to have to level so she can represent.

Thingie Goldwasher

Thingie

Quote: “No tanks!  No tank you.”

Will She Survive Pandas: Maybe.

Future: I’ve been debating deleting Thingie, and I’ve been debating making her a monk once Mists comes.  So far, her saving grace against both these fates has been her current ability to dual wield Shovels of Mercy.  If the human and the orc in that video had Shovels of Mercy, that panda would’ve had a far tougher time.  There will be no tanking for Thingie, so I foresee a lifetime of long queues, which is kind of depressing.

Majig Goldwasher

Majig

Quote: “I’m having an issue with some yetis.  Can I call you back?”

Will She Survive Pandas: I don’t know.  In fact, I don’t know what happened with playing a shaman.  It was fun, once, but now I just don’t know what I’m doing.

Future: Majig’s future is as tenuous as her sister Thingie’s.  Maybe I’ll play her for a little while with this new talent system and see how I feel about the shaman class, but as of late it’s been mostly indifference.

Ailabeth Blisswell

Ailabeth

Quote: “There are some ghosts who can never go home.”

Will She Survive Pandas: The question really ought to be, “Will pandas survive meeting Ailabeth?”

Future: Ailabeth will probably be the second to make it to 90, as I enjoy Levitate, Leap of Faith and Shadowform far too much.  Her goal is, more or less, to kill the sheeyit out of things and take their stuff and gold for transmog purposes.

Niremere Lane

Niremere

Quote: “I can only go forward from here.”

Will She Survive Pandas: Yes, although she’s a very long way from ever getting to Pandaland itself.

Future: SAVING THE WORLD.  Handing a huge catfish to King Chin (or possibly slapping him with it.  Is she in a protadin or a retadin mood?).  Daydreaming about marrying him, and using the combined power of the Church and Stormwind’s military to reclaim/make useful again Elwynn and Westfall.  Would insist on being generous with former Defias who agree to take an oath of loyalty and would put pretty much every person ever to work repairing or replacing infrastructure in Westfall because Being Nice and Doing Good Works is all for the Light.  Retaking Stromgarde Keep, because seriously, guys, after Lich King + Deathwing + Serious High Level Stuff, you’re really letting some lowbie rogues and ogres sit there and hold it?  The Horde will take it if you don’t do something!  Nir wants to do something!

Needs More Bears

NEW GUILD HANGOUT YEAH!

NEW GUILD HANGOUT YEAH!
Okay, so I only got maybe four people max up here.
BUT I ENVISION AN ENTIRE LINE OF DANCING BEARS!

Important discovery!  You can land on the noggin, ponytail and shoulders of the King Wrynn statue in Stormwind.  Sadly, you can’t land on his arms, the hilt of the sword or his chin.  I know, because I tried.  Yeah, this is what I spend my time doing in WoW.  I imagine Wrynn looking all SRS BIZNIS per usual, gazing down the long hall of the keep … and being pretty sure he’s hallucinating, because there are totally dancing bears on his head.  Anybody know a lot of druids?  I so need this to happen.
